Local SEO Guide 2024

Local SEO in 2024: The Ultimate Guide

Local search engine optimization (SEO) is one of the most effective ways to market your business.

People always use smartphones, virtual assistants, and voice searches to look for restaurants, shops, tourist attractions, and other businesses nearby. However, 58% of businesses don’t optimize for local internet searches. Local SEO involves managing your online listings to allow maps, search engines, voice assistants, and AI search engines to find you online and guide people to your business.

Stand out among your competition by following these local SEO best practices to get more eyes on your business and more feet through your door.

Key Components of Local SEO in 2024

The first step on your path to local SEO success lies with your Google Business Profile.

Claim and Verify Your Google Business Profile

If you haven’t claimed your Google My Business Profile, create a free account. Enter your name, address, phone number, hours, and website.

Once you’ve completed your profile, click “verify” and choose a verification method. Follow the steps and wait a few weeks for your profile to update. Claiming and verifying your business means nobody else can edit the information.

Add Photos and Information

Now that you’re officially on Google Business, you can optimize your profile and website for better local visibility. Add appealing, high-quality photos that showcase your merchandise in the best way.

Think about how it feels to see a photo of an ice-cold lemonade on a hot day. When you add these photos to your Google Business Profile, they pop up when people seek you out online.

Encourage and Respond to Reviews

A verified Google Business Profile also lets people review you. Respond to your reviews to make them work harder. Nearly 9 in 10 shoppers are willing to give a poorly reviewed business a chance if it responds to the review and addresses the problem.

When you are responding to negative reviews, don’t be defensive. Be professional and address how you are solving the issue.

Emerging Trends in Local SEO

As Google’s algorithm evolves, so does local SEO. These trends will likely drive SEO best practices over the next few years.

Conversational Content

Voice-powered internet searches are one of the biggest trends impacting how people search online. Whether they’re asking Alexa to recommend the best local Chinese restaurant for takeout or soliciting Siri to find the nearest gas station, people are increasingly searching the web with full sentences.

To pop up in these searches, adapt your content for conversational queries. Add keywords into your content that people would use when talking to an AI-powered assistant.

For example, if you want to pop up when someone’s looking for the best nail salon near me, you could add local awards to your website. Adding a photo of the award and a caption stating “named one of XYZ magazine’s best nail salons in Austin” makes you more visible to voice searches.

Long-Tail Keywords

This trend toward more conversational content also favors the use of long-tail keywords.

If you operate a small restaurant in South Congress, for instance, write a blog post about “what to do in South Congress” and tell readers what you like about the neighborhood. Encourage them to come visit after they’ve explored the neighborhood and incorporate three-to-five-word phrases people would use to find you through a voice search.

Tools and Technologies for Local SEO in 2024

Thankfully, you don’t have to guess whether or not your local SEO strategy works with these tools.

Local SEO Analytics Platforms

Take advantage of platforms that analyze your website and other internet data to show you how you rank in local searches. You can see your average rating, your average Google position, and locations in which you are highly visible. Use the data to change your local SEO strategy and monitor your metrics.

AI-Driven SEO Tools

AI tools can go beyond traditional metrics and deep dive into your data. Along with your search rankings, common search terms people use to find you, and user behavior, AI tools can show you your page speed, provide backlink assessments, and offer insights into your SEO strategy. By showing your strengths and weaknesses, your brand can make more effective, data-driven decisions.

Location-Based Social Media Marketing Tools

Enhance your social media strategy with location-based marketing tools that help you reach people in your area.

Targeting people by region or zip code on paid social posts helps you cast a smaller net to people in your area. Location-based marketing tools such as Google Trends tell you what is trending in your city so you can create related content.

Local SEO Audit and Monitoring Tools

Auditing tools run a full assessment of your website and internet presence to give you a clear picture of your local SEO. These platforms assess your analytics and other factors contributing to your ranking, such as user experience and mobile responsiveness.

How AI Content Creation Impacts SEO

How AI Content Creation Impacts SEO

With the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT tool in 2022, artificial intelligence has changed how we do marketing. In theory, instant content creation with AI frees you up to get creative with your SEO strategy, but it’s not as simple as plugging in a prompt and publishing the results.

AI content creation has come a long way in recent years, and it has huge implications for SEO. But to get the most out of this emerging tech, you’ll need to understand how it works—and how it doesn’t.

What is AI-Generated Content?

AI-generated content is any written or visual content created using a platform that operates with artificial intelligence. That includes software such as ChatGPT, AI Social Content Generator, AI Writing Assistant, and others, which quickly write articles, blog posts, white papers, and more based on user prompts.

These programs use natural language processing to learn how people talk and mimic the tone and flow of real human writing.

The Drawbacks of AI Content Creation

AI content creation may be faster than humans could ever be, but it does have its drawbacks.

For one, you need to know the right prompts to create quality content. Unless you’re giving your AI software specific and detailed instructions, it’s not going to create a high-quality piece. Even with a detailed prompt, you might still end up with a vague article that doesn’t say what you want to say. AI cannot capture the subtleties of human language.

For example, you may use white papers to persuade potential customers in the information-gathering stage to make a purchase. Since you understand your customers better than an AI tool ever could, you know which features to highlight and how to present them to your target audience. You get how your product or service benefits customers and addresses their pain points. AI cannot replicate these psychological cues that move customers through the marketing funnel.

Additionally, AI works by scouring the internet and compiling existing information. That means you run the risk of plagiarizing existing content if you’re only using AI to write for you. Almost 60 percent of AI-written content includes plagiarized information.

AI also doesn’t fact-check before putting out content. If you’re posting AI-generated content on your blog without proofing it, you could be releasing false information to the public.

Is AI Good for SEO?

These drawbacks are important to consider, but that doesn’t mean AI should be excluded from your marketing strategy.

If you’ve Googled anything recently, you’ve probably seen the search engine’s own generative AI in action. This feature includes a paragraph containing a summary of the top search results before showing you relevant websites related to your search.

However, these AI-generated results are still prioritized for relevance based on E-E-A-T guidelines:

  • Experience: Does the content creator have real-life experience in the subject matter?
  • Expertise: How much of an expert is the content creator?
  • Authoritativeness: Are they or their brand considered a reputable authority in the subject?
  • Trustworthiness: How much can a reader trust that their information is accurate?

If you’re using AI article creation without heavily editing or fact-checking the final result, your content will likely fail the E-E-A-T test, which pushes your website down the search engine results pages (SERPS). Google prefers high-quality content with a focus on user intent and accurate information.

The SEO industry should only use AI for research and assistance purposes. While tempting, no AI tool can replace the knowledge and direction of an experienced SEO strategist.

How to Use AI Content for SEO 2024

You’ll want to follow a few key best practices to make the most of AI in your SEO and content strategy.

Keep an Eye on Search Data

AI can sift through a mountain of customer data in a couple of minutes. An AI-powered analytics tool will help you get an idea of the keywords that are currently driving traffic to your site. Use this information as a starting point for an SEO strategy that capitalizes on your strengths.

Once you have an idea of where your web traffic is concentrated, work with a professional SEO strategist to strengthen weaker parts of your site and capitalize on popular pages. Human specialists are still critical for connecting keywords to user intent and keeping your content useful and relevant.

Generate Outlines

Even if you’re only using human writers, you can use AI to generate an outline.

These outlines help organize your thoughts and improve your blog posts and other content. Starting the writing process with an outline also speeds up your research so you can spend more time polishing your article.

However, it’s important to note that no AI tool can replace a human’s ability to craft compelling outlines that match your objectives, SEO targets, and brand voice. While many modern AI models can help with crafting a basic outline, you still need competent writers and SEO professionals to make sure the content is the right fit for you.

Edit Your Pieces

AI-powered tools such as Grammarly will assess your writing and suggest improvement. Before you publish a post or send an article out for publication, have the AI editor give it a first pass. Correct the comments and create a more interesting and engaging piece.

Once you’ve perfected your piece, have a human editor look it over to ensure accuracy and legibility. Motoza’s writing team does an extensive manual review of all content we publish, even using these new third-party proofreading tools.

AI-Generated Content is Here, but it’s Not Ready

AI content creation is improving, but it’s not perfect. At this moment, generative AI is no match for the human ability to connect emotionally with people reading and viewing your content. However, it can still be a valuable tool to create high-quality content people want to click on.

We’ll see what the future has in store for the marketing industry. Maybe one day, AI will replace us all. For the time being, keep using human strategists for your marketing needs. Ask your content creators and marketers how they use AI today to help with your campaigns.

As fans of technology, AI fascinates us, and its ability to craft content and do research is amazing. However, the human component at Motoza continues to be a core component of our long-standing success. Contact us today to see how we can help with your digital marketing needs.

How to Integrate SEO into your Overall Marketing Strategy

Motoza Whitepaper: How to Integrate SEO Into Your Overall Marketing Strategy

When consumers are searching for you online, your goal is to be found. Sounds simple, right?

Sadly, no.

‌It’s gonna take some work, and that starts with a cohesive digital marketing strategy guided by proven, tested SEO principles. ‌‌Let’s say you’re peddling insurance in Austin. Searching for “insurance Austin Texas’ will net you more than 140 million results.

Jeez. Hope you’re in the top few choices, cause if you aren’t, you’ll never be seen.

‌The top three spots on the homepage earn more than 55% of all clicks. The top 10 get 88%. The other 139,999,990+ get to slug it out over their share of — wait for it — just 2% of the available clicks. Want to compete? You gotta be on the first page.

You need an aggressive search engine optimization strategy embedded in your digital marketing strategy.

‌Why Integrate SEO with Your Marketing Campaign?

‌Google Stats didn’t do it for you? OK, here’s another reason you need to integrate SEO into everything you do: It grabs consumers across the entire customer lifecycle. Obviously, SEO helps people find your site with the whole “better rankings on search engines” thing. But it’s more than just adding some keywords to your pages, it’s about improving your site overall. While Google will take keywords into consideration when ranking, the most important thing is that the site is answering the question or need of the consumer.

So a site that’s optimized for Google is a site that’s optimized for searchers,  and a site that’s optimized for searchers– well, is optimized for customers and, therefore conversions.  The goal of your SEO campaign should be aligned with your overall marketing strategy. It’s just another tool in your marketing tool belt to build brand awareness, engagement, and interest, educate your audience, and ultimately drive those transactions.

‌Measuring SEO KPIs

How does Darth Vader measure things? With the Imperial System, of course! That may work for Darth and his son, but we’re stuck using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the rest of us, and they work differently for SEO.

For example, clickthrough rates show the immediate action users take (or don’t take). SEO, however, is a long game. Done right, it can bring self-generating traffic to your site. Kinda like the Axolotl.

SEO is like an AxolotlThat’s an amphibian that constantly regenerates and grows. Weird, but effective. Kinda like SEO.

Self-generating traffic means a constant source of referrals without having to constantly feed the ad meter.

Goal: Organic Conversions

The Motoza Organic Conversion Journey

  • ‌To get organic conversions, you must first drive traffic to your site.
  • ‌To drive traffic to your site, you must rank above the fold on page one of Google.
  • ‌To rank above the fold on page one, you need relevant content and authority.

Now we’re talking. Build valuable and relevant content that users want to read, then sprinkle in the pixie dust of SEO to wave your arms in the air and shout, “Hey Google! We have what your users want!”.

Build it, and they will come.

The SEO KPIs to Measure

‌Think of SEO like a staircase. You gotta start at the bottom and work your way up. You may not care about the bottom, but you aren’t going to the top without that first step.

‌From top to bottom, here’s what to measure.

  • Total keywords ranking
  • ‌Total target keywords ranking in the top 50
  • ‌Total target keywords ranking in the top 10
  • ‌Organic traffic trends over a 3–6-month period
  • ‌Organic conversion trend over a 3–6-month period

Organic conversions are your end goal, and they’re crucial to making a buck. For most companies, customer acquisition costs (CAC) are one of their biggest (if not the biggest) expenses. With a well-planned digital marketing strategy, SEO services attract and help convert customers organically. Every customer that comes to you organically reduces your overall CAC. SEO does the footwork for you. You don’t have to run after your target audience and chase them down. Let SEO run your race. SEO KPIs are based more on trends and momentum than individual metrics. Since SEO works over time, you should see incremental growth in your metrics with a well-managed strategy.

To summarize, steady upward trends mean healthy SEO.

Now for the Meat: How to Integrate SEO into Your Overall Marketing Strategy

Here’s the good stuff: how to actually do SEO and make it work for you. We’ve got nine proven steps that get the job done:

‌Step 1: Keywords

The first step is keyword research: how are people searching for the services/goods you provide? What’s Google prioritizing for those terms?  ‌Integrate keyword targeting into your overall marketing strategy by adding them to your buyer personas. While fleshing out who your ideal customer is, consider how they would likely take to search engines to find your product/service.  Think of Google as another platform where a customer can find and engage with you, and you’ll have SEO sitting pretty right next to your social media strategy, drip marketing campaigns, paid ads, and any other platforms you’re advertising on.

‌Step 2: Manage the Customer Journey

Layout the customer journey from the search terms your customers may use to find you, to the page you want them to enter your site on, to what pages you want to draw their attention to once they’re on your site, and finally which conversion actions they should take. This is crucial for marketing, and SEO should be handled as just another step with that funnel. Plus, it’ll have its own map within the bigger map. A map within a map.

Walk your online, organic traffic through their journey on your website. The better you lay this out, in tandem with your overall customer journey, the more effective your SEO and content strategies will be to actually drive conversions.

‌Step 3: Data-Driven SEO

When researching your target market, you may have taken note of things like what they’re into, how they make buying decisions, their demographics, pain points, etc. This is all applicable to your SEO. You want your website content to align with your market research as much as your marketing assets.

Some tricks to identify effective content for your SEO campaign:

  • Consult Google Trends to identify keywords that are gaining popularity or losing traction
  • Follow Reddit threads related to your target keywords
  • Keep up with trending X (Twitter) topics, which can make excellent SEO article topics
  • Check LinkedIn feed engagement, and other social signs to see what people are interested in that relate to your industry ‌
  • Check Google Ad planner for what keywords in your industry are getting traction.

Then, create content that speaks to these trends and answers questions, which is a nice segway into step 4.

‌Step 4: Website Content Strategy

Many companies just throw up blog articles as they go. They may look at content development as more of an obligation rather than an opportunity. Or they write content directed at their target market. Why is that problematic?

Well, your search audience is not necessarily the same as your target audience. You have to appease Google too. That means hitting topics that align with the way searchers use search engines. Your job is to provide content that addresses what searchers are looking for. Even if it doesn’t seem to quite target your preferred customer base, trust us. It will actually help you reach your target audience more effectively.

So here’s what you do:

Develop an integrated content plan to provide valuable resources and use other media, such as social, to drive traffic to those content pieces. Once they are on your site, use SEO tactics and data to keep them and move them along the customer journey.

This cycle becomes self-perpetuating (like our friend the axolotl) and persuades the Google gods to rank your content (site-wide) even higher. The idea here is to establish yourself as an expert on all things pertaining to your industry. The more angles you take it from, and the better optimized that content is to help search engines understand it, the better your site will perform overall in search results.  We call that content depth. And it has to be a full-blown strategy.

‌Step 5: Include SEO keys in Your Blog Strategy

Blog articles are likely included somewhere in your marketing strategy. It should also be a primary focal point of your SEO strategy. Done right, the SEO side of things will align with your overall content strategy and should simply serve as an extra optimization to increase the effectiveness of your content. So let’s say you have blog articles accounted for. Now let’s get techy.

SEO is more than just adding keywords. There are technical aspects that will help your blog articles generate traffic, and dictate how you show up on a search engine results page (SERP). Blogs, articles, and webpages all need target keywords,  SEO-enhanced meta titles, meta descriptions, and alt tags for images. External links to high-quality sources help with SEO, and internal links to related content do, too. Plus, they make you look smarter. Depending on the type of content you have, utilize schema markups to provide Google with even stronger signals as to what your content is about and why Google should care.

‌Step 6: Hit All the Birds with One Stone

Why hit only two birds when you can hit a bunch of them with one stone? That’s how SEO works. Repurpose your stuff, pull out elements for social posts, infographics, quotes, and anything else you can think of. One piece of great content can spawn all sorts of useful assets that can be used across all marketing channels. Likewise, assets used in other marketing initiatives can be repurposed for SEO if you incorporate it into your website with proper coding to tag it for search engines.

Step 7: Outline Your Content (and Then Write It)

‌Ever wonder why they used to draw those chalk outlines at crime scenes? It’s so they can provide context when they’re taking photos. Your chalk outline should also help you set the context for your content.

‌Oh, and always remember your content’s special purpose.

When designing your structure, outline your keywords, links, header tags, and other SEO strategies before beginning to write. Layout each section of content based on what information you should include to address search behavior. Content hierarchy is key here. Outline your articles based on the most important information first, and organize each section like a funnel. Not unlike the pyramid structure in journalistic writing.

‌Step 8: Remarket to Users

‌Once you capture consumer data, social media, and Google ads can help you nurture them through the customer journey by retargeting.

Here’s how it works: a customer enters your site through organic search. They explore your site and then leave. They then explore another website, which happens to be on the Google Display Network, and see a display ad for your company.  And then take to social media and see a Facebook ad carousel for your products.

Motoza Remarketing Ads can help engage visitors

These are called stalker ads–I mean retargeting ads. This is a perfect example of how your SEO campaign can work in tandem with your overall marketing strategy.

‌Step 9: Always Ask for the Next Step

‌SEO takes a long time to build. Don’t let your organic traffic leave empty-handed. Guide them on the journey and use multiple CTAs. Always ask for the sale – Every. Single. Time. Even if this isn’t quite a “sale”, but is just asking for their contact information. Provide your organic users with the information they already want. Encourage them to continue engaging with you so that they can continue receiving valuable content (that they already want). It’s another way to increase your audience for your drip marketing campaigns.

Follow these 9 steps, and you’re well on your way to integrating SEO into your marketing strategy.

In Conclusion

Well, there you have it. Implementing SEO into your marketing strategy isn’t rocket science, but it does take a good amount of thought and time to get it right.  Keywords are the foundation of any successful search marketing campaign. Your content will define how that ever-evolving, ever-giving, axolotl-type system can help generate exposure and sales to your business. Being consistent and focused is key.  Run some of these steps through your own business and see if there are some helpful actionable items your team can work on.

Google Gemini 21.5 and SEO in 2024

Google Gemini 1.5 & the Future of SEO AI: What We Know from Google I/O 2024

Google I/O 2024 was full of surprises. There were tons of announcements about AI and how it’ll integrate into every facet of Google’s products. In our opinion, one of their biggest announcements was how Google Gemini AI is integrating into Google’s suite of software.

In this article, we’ll delve into Google’s Gemini 1.5 upgrade, how it’s improved, and what it means to you, as well as projections on the future of SEO. Get ready to acclimate your marketing strategy to the drastic new changes in search.

Generative AI in Search

Have you ever been told “Google it!” in response to a question, only to find that the top search engine results are webpages that don’t exactly fit your question? Generative AI will help fix this problem by going further than just looking at keywords. Generative AI aims to enhance search results by combining SEO AI with organic and sponsored content to help offer a more intuitive result. This new system will analyze the context and intent behind your entire search query, phrase, or question for more accurate answers. This means that marketers and business owners will have to upgrade our SEO strategy to make sure Google will include us in these generative results.

How AI Will Change the Way Search Results Appear

With AI, search engines won’t just be an endless page full of links anymore. Google is making a huge shift to a dynamic platform that changes with each search based on user intent. These are just a few of the ways Gemini AI will guide Google in prioritizing webpages.

  • User Intent: Keywords will still be important, but the focus of search results will shift to user intent. When you search for something like “best hiking trails in McKinney Falls,” you’ll get detailed information about specific trails rather than generic information about McKinney Falls. User Intent has been, and will continue to be a crucial part of all our content marketing campaigns.
  • AI Summaries: Instead of clicking through dozens of web pages to find what you need, Gemini will create a summary of all relevant sites, based on intent. For SEO, it will be important that you structure your content so that AI picks up relevant parts of it to show users.
  • Structured Results: AI will sort search results by category. For example, suppose someone is searching for a recipe. In that case, Gemini may put bits of content into separate categories for ingredients, instructions, etc., with links to the source content embedded in the structured result.
  • Personalized Search: Google has been doing this for a while, but now it will incorporate your browsing history and past searches to generate results. It aims to save time by showing users more relevant information based on their interests.
  • Fact-Checking: Gemini will provide supporting links from authoritative sources in search results to substantiate claims. This will help diffuse misleading information on the Internet.
  • Search with video: Google will soon roll out a feature that allows you to search with video. For example, a user may lift the hood of their car, take a video of their engine, and ask why it’s making a strange noise. Google will then provide answers based on what it sees and hears. We’ll be sure to share more information on this new search method once we play around with it!
  • Multi-step reasoning: Google will use Gemini 1.5 to enable you to ask multiple questions in the same search query. You could ask Google, “what are the best ice cream parlors in Austin, TX? Give me directions to the closest one and show me their menu.” AI will use multi-step reasoning to give you all of the answers at once.

How Content Will Be Even More Important in this New Era

The Gemini era is nigh, and you must revamp your content strategy to be on the cutting edge of SEO in the near future. Expect to refine your content for a few key qualities:

  • Authoritativeness: Your brand and content should showcase your trust and credibility with the public. Reviews, credible backlinks, credentials, and factual content will be vital to ensure that Generative AI will use your sites in its results.
  • User Intent: Create highly unique and insightful content considering your target audiences’ search intent. Don’t rehash what your competitors are doing, or you may risk being outranked by a generic Gemini AI summary.
  • Technical SEO: Double down on long-tail keywords, content clarity, and user-friendliness. This allows the AI to quickly scan your site to grab content it may want to use in its new features.

Additional Gemini 1.5 Features

Google will also roll out new features within its current suite of software that are pretty impressive:

  • Enhanced Gmail Integration: Gemini will analyze attachments such as PDFs and videos that you receive and provide summaries on them.
  • Live Video: You’ll be able to use your phone’s camera to have conversations with Gemini about things in your environment in real-time.
  • 2 million Token Capacity: Gemini is able to process large amounts of data up to 2 million tokens. For scale, a full-length novel is about 100,000 tokens. At the time of this writing Gemini 1.5 Pro supports 1 million token input but will soon expand to 2 million.

Final Thoughts

Are you excited about Google Gemini AI yet? Overall, this will be like any other major change Google has made with SEO: a challenge at first, but with huge opportunities for growth. Get on the cutting edge with the best tools and strategies to optimize your content for SEO AI. 7 Questions to Ask your SEM Agency

7 Questions to Ask your Digital Marketing Agency

So, you’ve teamed up with a digital marketing agency. The honeymoon phase is over, and now things are just cruising along. We all know digital marketing, whether paid ads or organic SEO, takes time to show results. Patience is key, but that doesn’t mean you should be left in the dark. It’s crucial to make sure your agency is on the right track, even if you have yet to see the payoff. An informed client is a happy client, so here are seven questions to ask at your next meeting:

“Are you tracking conversions?”

What good are visitors and search engine rankings if none become paying customers? Your marketing agency should track not only increased traffic to your site but also your online sales! Whether it’s SEOGoogle Ads, or social media advertising, every platform has options to easily track how successful your campaign is going. Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics 4 have various options to track all sorts of events and actions on your website. Working closely with your marketing agency for proper conversion tracking is a must.

“Do you know my average profit margin for each service/product I sell?”

Any proper marketing campaign has to be based on generating a positive return on investment (ROI). If your marketing agency doesn’t know how much you make for every product/service you sell, how could they calculate your ROI? Too often, search marketing agencies focus entirely on visits and rankings and neglect how much money you’re making for every marketing dollar.

Now, to be fair, these numbers realistically come from you. You should be prepared to share these figures with any marketing professional you work with to ensure they’re not working in the dark. If they haven’t asked, bring it up and see what they can do to incorporate it into your conversion tracking and reporting.

“Are there realistic goals and ROI expectations based on my analytics and marketing objectives?”

More often than not, small business owners are sold on the grand returns that can come from digital marketing. Sales departments thrive on selling clients on strong ROI within unrealistic time frames, all to get a contract signed. Does your marketing agency review your progress routinely, consider your cost-per-acquisition and update you on realistic timeframes to see more success? Marketing online can take much longer than anticipated to generate results, and your marketing agency must keep you aware so that you’re not caught with unexpected delays in your company’s growth.

“Do you know what my competitors are doing better than I am?”

If you’re only focusing on what you and your website are doing, you’re missing out on a goldmine of info and opportunities from your competitors. Want to boost your marketing game? Start by understanding what your rivals are doing, both good and bad. Competitor analysis is key to making the most of your marketing budget, hitting the right notes with your audience, and standing out as a market leader.

“For SEO, do you do ‘Link Building,’ and if so, what’s your process?”

In SEO, link building is the process of getting other websites to link back (or ‘mention’ within content’) to your website. Historically, the more links your website has, the better chance you’ll rank higher in Google for your target keywords. Link building comes in many forms, from ugly spam and outsourced work to high-quality content-driven articles on well-known, high-authority websites. If your agency is doing link building for your SEO (which they should be), where are they posting your website link? Do they have a monthly list of places they’re posting to, and do they share it with you?

“Do you provide a monthly recap of items you’ve worked on for my campaign?”

SEO and digital marketing can often be confusing and obscure processes. It’s vital that your monthly reports contain information on what is routinely being done for your campaign. Monthly printouts or exports of general analytics and rankings are not enough to give you a good idea of what’s being done. Ask your agency, ‘What do you do for me each month?’ and see if they can provide more information on each monthly report.

“Do you keep up and change your process based on latest trends and best practices?”

Search marketing evolves as fast as tech does. What worked last year might be outdated now. Since SEO and paid search can be a bit of a mystery to many businesses, it’s easy for digital marketing agencies to get lazy and stick to simple, old-school methods. The risk? Your campaign might flop, or worse, Google could flag you for breaking their rules. So, ask your agency: how do they stay on top of the latest trends, and how often do they refresh their strategies?

How this helps

Well, there you have it. We’re not saying to accuse your digital marketing agency of not doing any of the things above. There’s tons of agencies and SEM contractors out there that do a great job for their clients. However, there’s also a lot of shifty companies out there that love to cut corners and focus only on their sales. We hope these questions can help bring a bit of clarity to your business relationshipand improve your campaign.

Your Enterprise SEO Checklist for a Website Redesign

Need to revamp your website while incorporating the latest enterprise SEO best practices? There’s good news for those of you who have mastered SEO 101: Many of the same principles apply whether you’re a multinational corporation looking for global SEO services or an average Joe trying to prove to Google that you really do exist.

To get the very best results, you’ll want to hire an enterprise SEO company to audit your site. But this checklist — actually, these checklists — will help you stay on top of enterprise search engine optimization as you tackle your website redesign.

Each checklist focuses on one of the major classes of SEO factors and provides a list of related elements to consider.

Enterprise SEO Checklist: Online Presence

The fight for online presence is a global popularity contest, and an international SEO agency can manage your campaign during your redesign.

Basic Principles

Keep these tips in mind when working on your online presence.

Dress for Success: Part of your online presence is how you appear in Google searches, so optimize your page titles and meta descriptions.

Network: Off-page SEO is also important. Establish your network of backlinks, and set up your social media profiles — even if you don’t manage them.

Be Local: It’s just as vital to claim your company info on Google Maps, Yelp, and Bing. Even if your business spans continents, much of your clientele probably needs goods or services local to them. All of your information should be current for all of your locations.

Your Online Presence Checklist

  1. Claim major citations. Manage your business listings on sites such as Google Maps.
  2. Optimize page titles. Edit the page headlines that appear on search engine results pages (SERPs).
  3. Optimize meta descriptions. Edit the descriptions of pages that appear under page titles on SERPs.
  4. Build backlinks. Earn incoming hyperlinks to your website.
  5. Set up social media. Create accounts on major social media platforms.

Enterprise SEO Checklist: Site Authority

Google wants to send its browsers to high-quality websites that provide relevant information and a positive user experience. You must convince the world — bots and humans alike — that your website delivers just that.

Basic Principles

Become authoritative by following these rules:

Be Meticulous: Track your domain authority, a score that measures your website’s search performance. Bad code and broken links harm your authority, so run an audit and clean up any 404 HTML and CSS errors. You’ll also need to ensure that your site is secure and quick to load.

Pick the Right Keywords: While small businesses should focus on asserting their presence with long-tail keywords, enterprise SEO services have you focus on expanding your keyword reach. Do your research and target keywords for which you rank in striking distance — searches where you appear on the second SERP.

Check Off Fundamentals: Make good use of your homepage’s H1 tag and phone number. The first let people know what you do, and the second tells them where to find you. Put your number on the site in HTML so Google can use it to bring you local traffic.

Your Site Authority Checklist

  1. Research current domain authority. Use an enterprise SEO agency or calculate it with an online tool.
  2. Optimize homepage H1 tag. Write a clear statement of what you do.
  3. Integrate keywords into content. Use words for which you already rank highly or for which you rank on the second page.
  4. Audit for 404 HTML errors. Get rid of dead links.
  5. Audit for CSS errors. Clean up website code.
  6. Maintain site security. Use an SSL certificate.
  7. Improve page speed. Ditch redundant or inactive plugins.
  8. Add HTML phone number. Avoid phone numbers that search engines can’t crawl.

Enterprise SEO Checklist: Site Structure

One of the major concerns for corporate SEO is site structure. The bigger your site is, the harder it is to crawl.

Basic Principles

Be search-engine friendly with these tips:

Clarify Content, Business Location, and Site Architecture: Provide an XML map, and check that URLs are easy to read. Make sure that your pages all have internal links that connect them to other parts of your website.

Your address should appear on every page. You can also incorporate location microformats or lines of HTML code that link your address to related content.

Design for Mobile Use: Remember that 56% of internet traffic happens on mobile devices. As you redesign your site, focus on providing the best user experience for people on the go.

Your Site Structure Checklist

  1. Take advantage of location microformats. Use Schema.org to link content to location.
  2. Create an XML site map. Let search engines know what everything is and where it belongs.
  3. Optimize URL structure. Edit URLs to indicate the page topic clearly.
  4. Establish geolocation sitewide. Put your physical address in the footer of every page.
  5. Optimize for mobile devices. Make sure your website is easy to use on a phone.
  6. Establish internal links. Every page should connect to at least one other.
