Still want to learn more about SEO? Let’s Dive into some Basics.

So, let’s first go over what SEO is. Google (and other search engines) are still the de facto way people find new information and businesses online.

Search Engine Optimization is a marketing process where we aim to get your website and content ranking prominently for keyword searches being looked for by your potential customers. Now, that’s not including ‘being on Google’ when someone searches for you, it means appearing for searches that new potential leads could be looking for, leading them to discover your business.

SEO brings new people to your website and turns them into potential new clients.

SEO is most effective for businesses committed to long-term growth. We’ll be honest, though. While most businesses can benefit from SEO, it’s not always the top priority depending on your goals and timeline. If you’re looking for fast, short-term results, other marketing channels may be more suitable. However, SEO is a great fit if you’re ready to invest in a sustainable strategy that builds visibility and drives consistent traffic over time.

Here’s how it works: A search engine’s job is to ‘catalog’ the internet. Think about how searching on Google works, you search for something, and Google gives you a list of sites that match what you looked for. While this may change with the introduction of AI technologies and the emergence of ‘zero-click’ results, traditional searching is still the primary way people use the web.

Google wants to show users the most relevant, up-to-date websites so that the user finds what he or she wants. Google uses its famous algorithm to determine what a site is about and where it lands on its catalog. Our job is to make your site sends all the right signals so that Google is convinced you should not only show up when people search for keywords related to you, but also rank you close to the top.

What are some of those signals? Things like the content on your site, what other sites say about you, the age of your domain, reviews, and hundreds of other factors can determine rankings.

SEO is absolutely still important in 2025! While there has been a considerable growth in social media usage, search engines like Google still dominate the web in moving traffic to where they want to go. It’s estimated that Google still processes millions of searches per minute, totaling trillions of searches annually.

On top of that, SEO tends to perform better than other marketing channels. With higher close rates than traditional sales methods, SEO tends to have much higher average ROIs when performed well. According to DesignRush’s 2025 SEO statistics, high-quality SEO campaigns can yield an average return on investment between 400-748%!

SEO takes time — no matter if you’re doing it yourself, working with us, or even hiring the most prestigious SEO agency out there. That’s just how Google works. It’s important to set realistic expectations from the start: SEO can be incredibly effective, but it’s a long game. Google ultimately decides who ranks where, and sometimes those changes happen slower than we’d like.

It’s tough to give an exact timeline, but we usually recommend planning and budgeting for at least 6 to 12 months of consistent SEO. You’ll likely see some progress earlier on (like better rankings or increased traffic), but leads tend to come a bit later. Around that 6–12 month mark, most clients start seeing noticeable traction and often expand to target even more keywords. A successful campaign continues far beyond 12 months, as you can see with our average client retention being around three and a half years.

It’s a common misconception that once a designer or freelancer does some “SEO work,” your site is fully optimized. In reality, SEO is made up of two key parts: on-page and off-page.
Most web designers or platforms focus on on-page SEO — things like basic technical setup, filling out meta tags, and making sure your site is structured in a way that search engines can understand. That’s a great starting point, but it’s really just the foundation.

Effective SEO requires ongoing work. This includes regularly producing content, building high-quality backlinks, and continuously adjusting your strategy based on Google’s evolving algorithm updates. That’s where an agency comes in — we don’t just make your site SEO-friendly, we actively work to improve your rankings, visibility, and lead generation over time.

Both SEO and Local SEO aim to help your business show up when people search for you on Google — but they focus on slightly different things based on search intent.

Google has gotten really good at understanding what users are looking for, especially when it comes to local intent (like “plumber near me” or “coffee shop in Austin”). That’s where Local SEO comes in. It’s designed to help businesses show up in local map results, business listings, and review sections, in addition to the standard search results.

Traditional SEO focuses more on things like content creation, keyword strategy, and link building to improve your site’s rankings on a broader scale.

Local SEO, on the other hand, zeroes in on things like:

  • Optimizing your Google Business Profile
  • Managing reviews
  • Ensuring your business info is accurate across directories
  • Plus, incorporating the usual SEO elements like on-page optimizations and links

In short, Local SEO complements traditional SEO — it just targets customers in your geographic area a bit more directly.

When it comes to measuring the success of an SEO campaign, there are a few key metrics (KPIs) that are typically front and center:

  • Average keyword rankings – How your site ranks in Google search results for targeted keywords.
  • Organic traffic – The number of visitors who find your site through unpaid (organic) search.
  • Conversions or sales from organic traffic – Whether it’s purchases, form submissions, or phone calls, this tracks how well that traffic is turning into actual business.

Of course, there are plenty of other metrics worth watching — like search impressions, bounce rates, content engagement, and technical usability — but those three are usually the foundation for tracking SEO progress.

Even though SEO is a long-term strategy, we start tracking these metrics early to show steady movement and identify growth opportunities. For instance, even if leads are still ramping up, seeing your keyword rankings improve month-over-month is a clear sign that the strategy is working.

Generative search is a new kind of search experience powered by AI that doesn’t just show a list of links — it generates answers in real time based on what you’re looking for.

Instead of traditional search results, generative search (like Google’s AI Overviews) can:

  • Summarize information directly on the search page
  • Combine insights from multiple sources
  • Give more natural, conversational responses

For example, instead of showing 10 links when you search “best marketing tips for small businesses”, generative search might give you a paragraph summarizing the top strategies — all without you needing to click a single link.

As of 2025, Generative Search Optimization is still in its early stages. However, early signs suggest that SEO agencies focused on high-quality content and proven strategies — like Motoza — are well-positioned to help clients create content that’s effective today and optimized for tomorrow’s evolving search experiences.
