Instagram to Hide Your Likeability: Are the Rumors True?
Article by Edith Salinas
Instagram has announced it will take away visibility of likes. Jane Manchun Wong, is an app developer who gets her hands on new unreleased features. When she tweeted that Instagram is getting rid of likes, user’s faces turned into a big a question mark. This new feature seems to reverse Instagram’s current functionality, which revolves around the number of likes influencers’ content generates. Instagram has rapidly evolved from being an app to share genuine slices of life to an app where you share modern-day advertisements with a “slice of life” tactic. Influencer marketing is greatly incorporated in many companies’ budget, where the faces of their products are people whose likes validate their status.
This new function, which is currently being testing in Canada, is meant to reduce the stress that social media can cause on people. Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, said, “We want people to worry a little bit less about how many likes they’re getting on Instagram and spend a bit more time connecting with the people that they care about”. Social media’s direction seems to be going back to what it was meant to be: interpersonal communication, actual meaning and not numeric or monetary value.
The question remains, will this be the end of influencers and their advertising career, as well the end of social media marketing strategies? We might be able to see a big shift in budget as well as content strategy. This might mean a clean slate for businesses social media accounts, in which the right SEO & Marketing Strategy can help that businesses Instagram account to boost up. This is only but an evolution of social media marketing, and one, which companies’ and analysts might want to look at closely.
